Abdominal pain is an extremely common ailment that can affect individuals of all ages. The pain can be mild, severe, localized or widespread, and it may be caused by a variety of conditions that are both serious and benign. As such, we advise all of our patients to seek treatment for unexplained and persistent abdominal pain as soon as possible, so our physicians can promptly resolve the underlying issue.

For years I thought my stomach pains after eating were normal – but they weren’t. Now, thanks to the care and attention of Dr. Jacobs and his team, my health is restored, I feel better than ever and my abdominal discomfort is nothing more than a distant memory. Thank you, Unison!

What causes abdominal pain?

We all experience abdominal pain at one point or another. And while the symptom can be caused by benign issues like menstrual cramps or gas, it can also develop due to a variety of more serious conditions, such as:

  • Food allergies
  • Indigestion
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Ulcers
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Appendicitis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Pancreatitis
  • An infection in the abdominal lining
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • Diverticulitis

Should you see a doctor about your abdominal pain?

Many of our Los Angeles patients hesitate to seek medical care for their abdominal pain because they consider it to be a relatively harmless symptom. However, as you can see from some of the conditions associated with abdominal discomfort, it’s far from harmless and could indicate a serious underlying medical problem. As such, we recommend scheduling an appointment if your abdominal pain persists longer than a few days.

In addition, you should seek immediate medical attention if:

  • Your pain emerges after an accident or injury.
  • You also experience chest pain or pressure.
  • Your pain is accompanied by blood in the stool, nausea and vomiting, yellow skin, severe abdominal tenderness and abdominal swelling.
  • Your pain is so severe that it's impossible to sit still.

A holistic approach to resolving abdominal pain

At Unison, we don’t simply mask your symptoms with traditional medications that don’t address the root cause. Rather, we believe in a holistic approach to medicine, which involves identifying the precise source of your discomfort and addressing the underlying problem. In this way, we restore your optimal health and get you back on the path to total wellness. As such, if you’re experiencing abdominal pain, we will begin by collecting detailed information about your symptoms – including their severity and duration.

We will then ask you about your medical history and run a few tests to achieve a definitive diagnosis. Once we’ve identified the precise cause of your pain, we will compose a customized treatment plan, blending traditional medicine with alternative therapies to resolve the underlying problem and eliminate your discomfort.

For example, in addition to conventional medications, we may also recommend acupuncture, herbs, dietary changes and a number of other holistic remedies that are proven to benefit your condition.
