In today’s world, obesity is a severe public health crisis. Affecting more than 3 million Americans each year, the condition can lead to a number of serious health outcomes, including cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. At Unison, we are committed to helping you lose the weight – so you can lead a long, healthy and vibrant life.

I’d grown complacent with being obese – until I was diagnosed with heart disease. That changed everything. With Dr. Jacobs’ help and constant encouragement, I lost the weight I’d been carrying around for years. I’m the healthiest and fittest I’ve ever been – and I’ve never felt better. Thank you, Unison!

What causes obesity?

If you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, generally you will be diagnosed with obesity. The condition has a number of different causes, and can be influenced by hormones, behaviors and genetic factors. However, obesity typically develops when you consume more calories than you burn, resulting in excess fat. This usually occurs due to a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits, such as a daily diet that involves fatty foods and beverages that are high in calories.

How obesity affects your health and lifestyle

If you’ve been diagnosed as being obese, it’s critically important that you take action to improve your health. Carrying around excess weight puts you at a high risk for a number of serious health problems, including:

  • High cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Sleep apnea
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Infertility
  • High blood pressure
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Liver disease
  • Osteoarthritis

In addition to the impact obesity has on your overall health, the condition can also diminish your quality of life. You may avoid going out in public and socializing due to your weight, and you may begin to avoid activities you used to enjoy, such as going to the beach, traveling and going to the movie theater. In addition, many obese individuals report feeling depressed, ashamed, guilty and isolated because of their weight.

A holistic approach to treating obesity

To begin, we’ll help you find a healthier meal plan that keeps you satisfied, but also reduces the number of calories you consume each day. You can be assured that this diet won’t be drastic or unrealistic, and will result in slow and steady weight loss that you can maintain over the long-term. Once we’ve gotten your diet on the right track, we’ll focus on increasing your activity on a daily basis. We’ll start by having you walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week – a very manageable goal for our Los Angeles patients that you can easily accomplish on your lunch break.

Once you’re on a healthy diet and exercise plan, we’ll recommend a number of extremely effective holistic treatments that can improve your odds of success. For example, therapy can help you address any emotional and behavioral issues that are related to your eating habits. In addition, acupuncture, herbal remedies, meditation and yoga can all be terrific complements to your treatment regimen.

At Unison, we know how challenging it can be to lose weight and overcome your obesity. You may feel as though you’re fighting a losing battle – but we want you to know that there is hope. As your trusted partner on this journey, we’re here to help you lose the weight and reclaim your health – in many cases without medication or weight loss surgery.
