What is coronary artery disease?

Coronary artery disease develops when plaque builds up in the arteries that are responsible for carrying blood, oxygen and vital nutrients to your heart. Over time, the blockage will cause a narrowing of your arteries, decreasing the amount of blood that can reach your heart. This leads to a number of complications, including:

Chest Pain

With coronary artery disease, chest pain typically develops during physical activity because the heart isn’t receiving the blood it needs.

Arrhythmia

In some cases, coronary artery disease can also lead to an abnormal heart rhythm, which can prevent the heart from beating properly.

A heart attack

Once a complete blockage occurs in the arteries, the damage may cause a heart attack.

Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the organ cannot function or pump blood properly, due to damage from coronary artery disease.

Risk factors for coronary artery disease include growing older, a family history of heart disease, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle, being overweight and suffering from high levels of stress. If you have some of these risk factors and symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain, it’s important to seek a complete evaluation as soon as possible. Doing so will allow us to identify any problems in the early stages – before you experience a heart attack.

A holistic approach to treating coronary artery disease

Many of our Los Angeles patients ask us if their coronary artery disease can be reversed. And the answer is, absolutely! This condition is very much influenced by your lifestyle. Just as your lifestyle choices can contribute to coronary artery disease – they can also treat it. As such, with the right treatment approach, lifestyle changes and healthcare partner, it is definitely possible to reverse your condition and restore your optimal heart health.

Although these changes are extremely effective in treating coronary artery disease, we understand that it’s difficult for many of our Los Angeles patients to get used to their new lifestyle. As such, we’re here to help you through these adjustments every step of the way, to ensure that you stick to your treatment plan and are able to get your heart back in optimal shape.

In treating and attempting to reverse your coronary artery disease, we will first recommend a number of important lifestyle changes. For example, we may advise you to quit smoking, adopt a new healthy diet, exercise regularly, lose weight and learn stress reduction techniques. Depending on your unique circumstances, we may also recommend consuming more fish and flax to reap the anti-inflammatory benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. And finally, we will likely prescribe a custom blend of herbal remedies and supplements that are proven to have a positive effect on coronary artery disease, and may help you to reverse your condition and prevent complications from developing.
